Isle of Bute

Renowned for its glorious gardens, grand architecture, friendly locals and just a stone’s throw away from the mainland, the Isle of Bute is a must for all travellers.

Staying at the main port town of Rothesay famed for its Victorian grandeur and discovering the hidden villages and spectacular scenery this holiday has it all! We will visit Mount Stuart House, built for the 3rd Marquess of Bute, in the late 1870s. We will also visit Inverary Castle the home of the Duke of Argyll, Chief of the Clan Campbell and the iconic, must-see visitor attraction on the West Coast of Scotland.

Set in an outstanding position above its own terraced gardens, the Glenburn Hotel enjoys a superb panorama across the waters of Rothesay Bay to the Cowal Peninsula. The town’s shops, harbour and medieval castle ruins are just a pleasant walk away along the palm-fringed promenade. Hotel entertainment is provided each evening. All bedrooms are en suite and have television, hairdryer and tea/coffee making facilities. The lift serves most floors.

Monday

Departing from you local area we make our way to the Firth of Clyde and Wemyss Bay. Here we join the Calmac ferry for the crossing to the Isle of Bute and Rothesay, arriving late afternoon at Glenburn Hotel. 4 nights stay - dinner, bed & breakfast. Hotel entertainment each evening.

Tuesday

Today is free for you to explore your new surroundings. Make your way into the town - a pleasant walk along the promenade, enjoy lunch and relax and watch the world go by, or have a lazy day in the hotel and admire the views to Loch Striven and beyond.

Wednesday

A spectacular sightseeing tour today. We make our way to the north of the island to Rhubodach. Here we join the ferry for the 10 minutes crossing to Colintrave, continuing northwards to Loch Fyne. We follow the coast road around the tip of the loch, turning south to the lovely little white-washed town of Inveraray. There is time for a look around and obtain a drink and bite to eat before our afternoon visit to magnificent, unique and fascinating Inveraray Castle, the ancestral home of the Duke of Argyll (Featured in Downton Abbey as Duneagle Castle). Later we retrace our steps to Colintrave and the ferry to Bute.

Thursday

This morning we have a sightseeing drive around Bute, ending with a visit to the superb Mount Stuart House. Set in 300 acres of landscape and woodlands, the house is known as Britain's most spectacular Victorian Gothic House. It is an architectural fantasy of the 3rd Marquis of Bute. Set 5 miles south from Rothesay this is an ideal way to end the tour, the house and grounds offer the visitor much to see. From here we return to the hotel.

Friday

Leaving the hotel we cross by ferry to Wemyss Bay and make our way home.
